Protecting technical facilities against flooding
Both our rivers and watercourses and the technical drainage systems (sewers) can only absorb limited amounts of precipitation.
Depending on the degree of sealing and other local conditions, flooding can then occur above a certain precipitation intensity. As climate change is causing more heavy rainfall, the probability of flooding is likely to increase in the future.
A variety of flood prevention measures
The best protection against flooding is to prevent situations of extreme flooding from occurring in the first place. Any measures that allow sufficient space for the water are of helpful here, since rivers need adequate floodplains and must not be technically constricted and straightened. Decentralised infiltration and deconstruction of sealed surfaces also help to reduce rainwater run-off into the sewage system.
Technical flood protection
Despite many efforts, it will not be possible to completely eliminate the risk of flooding in many regions. In these cases, however, it must be guaranteed that no people are endangered in the event of flooding and that damage to technical facilities is minimised. In addition, it must be ensured that important facilities such as of water supply and wastewater disposal can be maintained for as long as possible.
